The tub joint takes the most abuse

A bathtub moves. It flexes slightly when it fills with water and when someone steps in, and that motion works directly on the joint along the tub deck. Grout in that joint cracks almost immediately. Caulk there lasts longer, but once it fails, water runs behind the first row of tile and down toward the subfloor and the ceiling below.

Our tub recaulking process

We strip the old caulk completely, clean the tub deck and tile edge, and steam sanitize the joint at 220°F to remove mold that has worked into the gap. A trick of the trade that makes a real difference: the tub is filled with water before we caulk, so the joint is sealed at its widest. When the tub drains, the silicone is under slight compression instead of tension, which helps it last.

Signs your tub needs it now

Look for black or pink lines in the caulk, gaps you can slip a fingernail into, caulk pulling away at the corners, or loose tile on the bottom row. Staining on the ceiling below a second floor bath is a later sign that water has already found a path.
