Small cracks are a water problem, not a looks problem

A hairline crack in a grout joint looks minor, but it is an open channel. Every shower sends water through it and into the substrate. In a tub surround the damage often shows up first as loose tiles near the faucet or a soft spot along the bottom row. Repairing failing joints early is the least expensive moment to deal with it.

How we repair grout so it stays put

Patching over a crack with a tube of grout from the hardware store rarely holds, because the new material has nothing sound to bond to. We remove the damaged grout down to solid material, clean the joint with dry vapor steam at 220°F, and pack fresh grout that matches the surrounding color as closely as possible. When the damaged area is a large share of the shower, a full regrout gives a more uniform result, and we will say so when we quote.

When repair turns into something else

If grout keeps cracking in the same spot, something is moving: a loose tile, a flexing floor, or a change of plane that should have been caulked instead of grouted. Corners and the joint where wall meets tub are classic examples. We correct that by replacing rigid grout at those joints with flexible commercial silicone, which is the industry practice for movement joints.

Getting a price

Repair scope varies more than any other job we do, so we price it from your photos. Send a close shot of the damage and a wide shot of the whole shower, and we will reply with a flat number and tell you whether repair or a full regrout is the better value.
